These apps have been specifically designed to comply with prison regulations and allow family members as well as friends to send and receive messages images, photos, eCards video calls, and money into their trust accounts in prison. There are also federal inmate applications that provide additional services like phone calls and video visits.
The JPay app, for example, enables family and friends to transfer money into an inmate's trust account, along with images, emails, eCards and video grams. They can also design personal postcards by using their own photographs. It also provides a safer and more secure alternative to traditional postal mail.
Another popular texting app for inmates is GettingOut, which offers "simple and reliable communication" between inmates and their loved family members. The app is available at select correctional facilities and allows inmates to upload pictures and message family members and friends using their tablets. Inmates pay $0.25 per message and their loved ones pay data costs to access them (but there are no explicit images). The GettingOut app allows you to upload a picture to Facebook or Foursquare, check-in to Foursquare and even add an YouTube video.
